What is it?
The Naval Reserve Officers Training
Corps (NROTC) is designed to educate and train qualified young men
and women for service as commissioned officers in the unrestricted
line Naval Reserve or Marine Corps Reserve. Unrestricted line officers
serve in one of the Navy or Marine Corps warfare specialties: Surface
Warfare, Naval Aviation, Submarines, Special Warfare, Combat Arms,
Communications or Logistics. NROTC is the largest single source
of Navy and Marine Corps Officers, filling a vital need in preparing
mature young men and women for leadership and management positions
in an increasingly technical Navy and Marine Corps.
Outstanding Academic Atmosphere:
Founded in 1872, Virginia Tech
is an accredited land-grant university with a long tradition of
excellence in education, with a strong commitment to undergraduate
education. The university consists of eight colleges which offer
over 70 undergraduate degree programs, as well as a number of specialties
and interdisciplinary options. The College of Engineering is nationally
known, and the Pamplin College of Business is fast becoming a leader
among business schools. With excellent courses of study being offered
by every college, you can choose a degree program that fits your
needs and desires and expect only the best.
Leadership Opportunities:
Virginia Tech is home to the Virginia
Tech Corps of Cadets - a military organization within a larger civilian
university, dedicated to developing tomorrow's leaders with the
qualities that are basic to success in any career - integrity, loyalty,
and a sense of honor. Virginia Tech is one of two universities in
the nation that offer this unique opportunity. Members of the Corps
of Cadets graduate with the leadership experience and skills necessary
to succeed in the world of work, both in and out of the military.
All three of the Armed Services ROTCs are integrated into the Corps
of Cadets, creating a vibrant, cohesive military environment in
which to learn. This setting gives you an opportunity to gain structured
military leadership experience within a small supportive atmosphere,
while taking advantage of the many benefits that a large university
has to offer. Cadets attend classes with their civilian counterparts,
and are able to participate in any of nearly 400 student organizations,
as well as many other activities on and around the Virginia Tech
campus. This combination produces well-rounded, successful leaders,
whether your goal is to become the captain of a ship or a captain
of industry
Earn a Minor in Leadership:
Students participating in the
Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets are eligible for a Minor in Leadership
based on the training and experience they gain while a member of
the Corps. Students who complete one of the three ROTC programs
automatically receive the minor when they complete their Bachelor's
Degree. Students in the Corps of Cadets who are not affiliated with
an ROTC can take several electives to qualify for this minor.
Guaranteed Commissioning
as an Officer in the Navy or Marine Corps:
If you complete all the requirements
of the NROTC program, you will be commissioned as an officer and
serve on active duty in the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps upon graduation.
Although the Virginia Tech NROTC Unit, established in 1983, is one
of the newest in the country, we are already one of the top producers
of officers for the Navy and Marine Corps. Ninety percent of our
graduating midshipmen receive their first choice for service selection,
whether they choose nuclear power training in submarines, Surface
Warfare, Naval Aviation, or one of a variety of Marine Corps disciplines.
A cross-town agreement with the Radford University School of Nursing
allows Radford Nursing students to complete NROTC requirements at
Virginia Tech and receive a commission in the Navy Nurse Corps upon
graduation. All of these exciting career opportunities are within
reach as an NROTC midshipman at Virginia Tech.
Emerging Leader Scholarship:
The Emerging Leader Scholarship
is a four-year award offered by the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets
(VTCC) that is available to many midshipmen. To learn more
about it, read the VTCC's letter
