Virginia Tech Naval ROTC commissioned twenty-six new Ensigns and Second Lieutenants on 14 May 2004. The guest speaker at the commissioning ceremony was Admiral Michael G. Mullen, Vice Chief of Naval Operations. Each new officer was administered the oath of office by an active duty or retired military officer.

Second Lieutenant Maurice Hukill, a Virginia Tech graduate who gave his
life in the bombing of the Marine Battalion Headquarters Building in Beirut,
Lebanon in 1983. The sword was presented by Maurice Hukill's mother.
