Captain Thomas G. Rubenstein, the son of a career Marine, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry.
After completing nuclear power and basic submarine training, he reported to USS SUNFISH (SSN 649) where he served as Main Propulsion Assistant, Damage Control Assistant, and Weapons Officer. In 1983, he was assigned as the Special Intelligence Collections Officer for Commander in Chief, United States Atlantic Command. While assigned to CINCLANT, he deployed onboard HMS NEWCASTLE as the Intelligence Officer.
After completing the Submarine Officer Advanced Course in 1986, he was assigned as the Navigator and Operations Officer on USS RICHARD B. RUSSELL (SSN 687). In 1989, he reported to the United States Naval Academy as a Company Officer and instructor.
He reported to the USS KENTUCKY (SSBN 737) in 1991 and served as the Executive Officer until 1993. After completing his tour as Executive Officer, he reported to the Office of Naval Intelligence with additional duties to the Chief of Naval Operations where he served as Operations Officer for the Special Operations Branch. While in Washington, D.C., he completed a Master of Science degree in Accounting at Strayer University.
In April 1996, he assumed command of USS LOS ANGELES (SSN 688). In December 1998, he reported as the Current Operations Officer and Assistant Operations Officer for Commander, United States Seventh Fleet in Yokosuka, Japan. Prior to reporting to Virginia Tech, Captain Rubenstein served as the Nuclear Propulsion Program Coordinator for Naval Service Training Command.
Captain Rubenstein's military awards include the Legion of Merit (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal (six awards), Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), and Navy Achievement Medal (two awards) and various service and unit awards.
